Some people might call this an alter-ego. There are many examples of this in the entertainment and sporting worlds.

I’d say that takes it beyond mindset if you start introducing a different style of dressing for example, but in principle it’s the same concept.

Our mindset impacts how we feel and how we behave.

We can have multiple mindsets.

And even build and trigger our own.

This is useful as part of our self-mastery journey to help us achieve our goals and behave in-line with our principles.

Defining your mindset

  • Give it a name. Something that characterizes your state.
  • Describe it’s purpose. When will you use it?
  • List its characteristics e.g. calm, focused, determined.
  • Outline its behaviors e.g. does the right thing regardless, accepts what’s out of my control.

Triggering your state of mind

You can use Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to create triggers using things like music, mantras and actions.

You need to build the trigger by thinking deeply about scenarios in which you will use your mindset and imagine your-self behaving and feeling the way you want. You need to build up the intensity of your feelings and as you do, plant the trigger.

For example, you could be doing the visualization process whilst listening to a specific song.

If you repeat it enough, when you hear the song you will trigger your mindset.

It takes repetition.

But the clearer your definition, characteristics and behaviors and the more you practice, the more deeply ingrained your mindset becomes.

Multiple mindsets

I have two primary mindsets:

  • One for every day use
  • One for when I need to find ‘the fire’

You may need more, or perhaps just the one.

Spend time thinking about the scenarios you face and if they require brining out another side of you by triggering a specific mindset.
