Do you need time?

What you with it does, because none of us know how much time we actually have. We can all consider how we spend our time and what feels best. Some of us choose the mindset that the world happens to us, others believe we get to drive.

I think it’s a balance. Some things present themselves to us, like the incoming phone call or message. Other things we make happen, such as going for a run.

I believe we always have a choice in how we spend our time, it’s just the consequences of what we do vary. For example, it’s wise to spend at least some time on our mind and body…eating, drinking, brushing our teeth…not doing so leads to decline. Some value exercise, meditation and socialising more than others – that can depend on what makes you tick.

Then there’s work…or how we chose to make a living. Most of us need to earn, but we do get to choose how we do it. I appreciate that some of what we love to do doesn’t earn much, or seems unattainable. Maybe that’s when you do what needs to be done to earn and then make sure you create space for what you enjoy. For example we can outsource some tasks, such as cleaning, gardening and shopping delivery. That frees time for things we’d rather be doing, like writing or being with loved ones.

How we use our time seems straightforward. Of course it isn’t as simple as ‘I’ll just spend all of it on doing the fun stuff’ – a good wedge of our time needs to go on the things that maintain our environment – and the truth is that money can make a difference if you can use it on getting support that frees you up.

The trap to avoid is working to achieve something you already have – such as a simple life or loved ones.
