There is happiness in an upward trajectory, not just in moving forward or your current position in any given part of your life.

Are you happier if you’re X lbs but loosing weight, or the same X lbs and putting weight on? You’re the same weight, it’s just your direction that’s different.

It’s the same with your 5k run time, job and a multitude of other things.

I came across a good analogy:

There are three people on a ladder, one at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle.

Who is the happiest?

The ones still climbing.

There are part of your life that are more constant, your relationships for example – it’s less about momentum there and more about enjoying the now.

But spend some time evaluating your trajectory in all parts of life and consider what you might want to change.

It takes bravery, but it usually brings fresh drive.

A personal example for me has been my marathoning. The last 5 years have been almost zero physical progress, but the most effort I’ve ever put in. I didn’t realise how much carrying on was negatively impacting my happiness until I stopped and reframed exercise and changed my goals.

It gives me a bit of anxiety because it became part of ‘who I am’ and what I’m known for, so there is an element of fear that I will loose credibility. But I recognise it takes maturity to change and it’s ok to let things go.
